Discovering new favourite acts, hopping from club to club and meeting people from around the world along the way: that was Waves Vienna 2026. From 1 to 3 October, 110 acts from 27 countries played concerts across ten stages in front of 14.411 visitors along Vienna’s Gürtel. With the United Kingdom as Guest of Honour and a special focus on music in film, television and games, the 16th edition offered plenty to discover beyond the live programme, too.

New music that stays with you
From indie and alternative to electronic music, rock, pop and hip-hop, the joy of discovery was once again at the heart of the festival. Austrian and international acts shared the stages, turning the clubs along the Gürtel into meeting places for music and people.
“A showcase festival thrives on curiosity: about a band you haven’t heard of, a sound that surprises you or a night that takes an unexpected turn. With 109 concerts, we created plenty of opportunities for all of that. Thank you to the artists, venues and audiences who brought these three days to life,” says Festival Director Giovanna Fartacek.
Sharing ideas, shaping what comes next
The Waves Vienna Conference welcomed 1,361 participants from 32 countries. A total of 55 conference and accompanying events offered space for fresh ideas, practical insights and personal exchange, from panels and workshops to feedback sessions and networking.
This year’s focus was sync, the connection between music and film, television and video games. How does a song find its way onto the screen? How do music supervisors work? And what opportunities does this create for artists? The programme also explored human curation in the age of algorithms, gender equality and international collaboration.
“The conference was a tremendous success for us. Seeing people from 32 countries start conversations, share experiences and develop ideas together is exactly why we do Waves. We hope many of these connections will continue beyond the festival and lead to new collaborations,” says Festival Director Sarah Thomas Heher.
Music connects us across borders
Our Guest of Honour, the United Kingdom, featured throughout the live programme and conference. We explored Scotland’s music market, introduced leading UK showcase festivals and looked back at the Waves Vienna UK Residency.
Initiated by MEP Hannes Heide, “Rethink, Rework, Reassemble: The Future of UK–EU Cultural Exchange” asked how we can strengthen cultural exchange between the UK and the EU. The discussion addressed the barriers that remain, alongside the possibilities for moving forward together.

Neue Lieblingsacts entdecken, von Club zu Club ziehen und zwischendurch Menschen aus aller Welt kennenlernen: Das war Waves Vienna 2026. Von 1. bis 3. Oktober brachten 110 Acts aus 27 Ländern Konzerte auf zehn Bühnen mit 14.411 Besucher*innen entlang des Wiener Gürtels. Mit Großbritannien als Guest of Honour und einem besonderen Fokus auf Musik in Film, Fernsehen und Games gab es bei der 16. Ausgabe auch abseits der Konzerte viel zu entdecken.
Danke an alle, die mit uns zugehört, diskutiert, getanzt und neue Kontakte geknüpft haben. Ihr macht Waves Vienna zu dem, was es ist!
Neue Musik, die bleibt
Von Indie und Alternative über Elektronik und Rock bis zu Pop und Hip-Hop: Auch heuer stand die Freude am Entdecken im Mittelpunkt. Österreichische und internationale Acts teilten sich die Bühnen und machten die Clubs entlang des Gürtels zu Orten für musikalische Begegnungen.
„Ein Showcase-Festival lebt von der Neugier: auf eine Band, die man noch nicht kennt, auf einen Sound, der überrascht, und auf einen Konzertabend, der anders verläuft als geplant. Mit 109 Konzerten haben wir dafür viele Gelegenheiten geschaffen. Danke an die Artists, die Venues und unser Publikum, die diese drei Tage mit Leben gefüllt haben“, sagt Festivalleiterin Giovanna Fartacek.
Gemeinsam weiterdenken
Die Waves Vienna Conference versammelte 1.361 Teilnehmer*innen aus 32 Ländern. Insgesamt 55 Conference- und Rahmenveranstaltungen boten Raum für neue Ideen, praktische Einblicke und persönlichen Austausch, von Panels und Workshops bis zu Feedback Sessions und Networking.
Im Mittelpunkt stand diesmal Sync, also die Verbindung von Musik mit Film, Fernsehen und Videospielen. Wie findet ein Song seinen Weg auf den Bildschirm? Wie arbeiten Music Supervisors? Und welche Möglichkeiten ergeben sich daraus für Künstler*innen? Dazu kamen Diskussionen über menschliche Musikauswahl im Zeitalter von Algorithmen, Geschlechtergerechtigkeit und internationale Zusammenarbeit.
„Die Conference war für uns ein großartiger Erfolg. Zu sehen, wie Menschen aus 32 Ländern miteinander ins Gespräch kommen, Erfahrungen teilen und gemeinsame Ideen entwickeln, ist genau das, wofür wir Waves machen. Wir hoffen, dass viele dieser Begegnungen über das Festival hinauswirken und daraus neue Kooperationen entstehen“, sagt Festivalleiterin Sarah Thomas Heher.
Musik verbindet, auch über Grenzen hinweg
Unser Guest of Honour Großbritannien war im Konzertprogramm ebenso präsent wie in der Conference. Wir haben den schottischen Musikmarkt kennengelernt, britische Showcase-Festivals vorgestellt und auf die Waves Vienna UK Residency zurückgeblickt.
Bei der von EU-Abgeordnetem Hannes Heide initiierten Diskussion „Rethink, Rework, Reassemble: The Future of UK–EU Cultural Exchange“ ging es um die Frage, wie wir den kulturellen Austausch zwischen Großbritannien und der EU wieder stärken können. Ein Gespräch über bestehende Hürden, aber vor allem auch über die Möglichkeiten, gemeinsam weiterzumachen.
